Icecles Empty
PostSubject: Icecles   Icecles EmptyWed 27 Sep, 10:58

Valérie has a regiment idea for GD FR 2007 but she needs to add transparent icecles. We tried glue, but it's hard to give them the right shape. Any ideas?

raising the dead a little bit but did you sort this?

Icicles....

Get a clear plastic sprue from any model kit.
Heat over a candle flame until it softens.
Pull apart.
you should find that you'll get a tapered portion at both ends that can be cut as desired

It's basically the old Armour modellers' stretched sprue antennae trick

you may want to experiment. with how soft you let the plastic get and how hard you pull apart.......

Well ... it's been put on hold because of the new appartment and the mariage, but thanks for the info, we'll use it next time Wink.

I knew about the antena trick, but never thought about it for icicles. I guess one must also be careful of not blackening the transparency but it must look ace in the end Wink.

the blackening will depend on how you hold it over the hear source.

The method comes from a 1/35 armour modeller "guru" called Adam Wilder, and American who now works with Mig Jimenez in Spain. There's a magazine from the UK called AFV Modeller, one of the best out there, where the article came from. I'll check tonight for any further comments about it.

AFV Modeller are smart by selling articles for £1 from their online shop in PDF format......

I also know Jeff (Dragon Forge Design) has some icicles on his site for sale, not sure how well they work, but looks interesting and perhaps a time saver and they're real cheep

Take a transparent fishing wire and cover it with water effects. You can build it in layers as the watereffect tend to dry pretty fast. You can also manipulate it by pulling it when it's not entirely dry. If you want a less transparent approach you can use white glue as a first layer I think and then use watereffects afterwards. For small icicles you don't need any fishing wire as watereffects is much more easy to manipulate then glue.
